The State of Karnataka had taken a bold and innovative decision to establish a University of Health Sciences as far back as 1976. The phenomenal increase in the number of institutions and students admitted to various courses of medical and allied health sciences warranted the need to regulate, monitor and standardize the curricula as well as the evaluation system. The products of medical and health science professional education were to meet the societal needs for the better health care. The Central Council of Health has also recommended establishing Health Universities in all the States in the country. Keeping this in background the Government of Karnataka passed an Act in 1994 to establish the University of Health Sciences and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has been established. Thus a long cherished dream of having all the institutions of health sciences comes under one roof became a reality with the functioning of this University from 1st June 1996.
